Vocational Schools Online

Savoonga AK student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Savoonga AK students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online training, for instance studying safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will incorporate online education with on campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Things to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Savoonga AK trade schoolsOnce you have decided on the trade and type of certificate or degree that you wish to obtain, either online or on campus, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Savoonga AK area and across the United States to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first 2 aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Savoonga AK area vocational schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Savoonga AK is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It could also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Savoonga AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Savoonga AK area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Savoonga AK company if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Alaska and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Savoonga AK, check that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
