Learning a Vocation Online

Prudhoe Bay AK student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Prudhoe Bay AK students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for example studying safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new profession.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Prudhoe Bay AK trade schoolsAfter you have selected the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Prudhoe Bay AK area and all over the USA to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first 2 variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Prudhoe Bay AK area vocational programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive an excellent education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help determine the quality of a trade school near Prudhoe Bay AK is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It could also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Prudhoe Bay AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many trade programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Prudhoe Bay AK area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Prudhoe Bay AK contracting company if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with several of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Alaska and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Prudhoe Bay AK, verify that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Prudhoe Bay, Alaska

Prudhoe Bay /ˈpruːdoʊ/ or Sagavanirktok[pronunciation?] is a census-designated place (CDP) located in North Slope Borough in the U.S. state of Alaska. As of the 2010 census, the population of the CDP was 2,174 people, up from just 5 residents in 2000; however, at any given time, several thousand transient workers support the Prudhoe Bay oil field. The airport, lodging, and general store are located at Deadhorse; the rigs and processing facilities are located on scattered gravel pads laid atop the tundra. It is only during winter that the surface is hard enough to support heavy equipment, and new construction happens at that time.

Prudhoe Bay is the unofficial northern terminus of the Pan-American Highway. The Bay itself is still 10 miles further north than a security checkpoint so open water is not visible from the highway. A few tourists, arriving by bus after a two-day ride up the Dalton Highway from Fairbanks, come to see the tundra, the Arctic Ocean, and the midnight sun, staying in lodgings assembled from modular buildings. Tours must be arranged in advance (photo ID is required) to see the Arctic Ocean and the Bay itself.

Prudhoe Bay was named in 1826 by British explorer Sir John Franklin after his classmate Captain Algernon Percy, Baron Prudhoe. Franklin traveled westerly along the coast from the mouth of the Mackenzie River in Canada almost to Point Barrow.[1]
