Not only do you need to confirm that you will get the extensive training required to succeed in your new field, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Others may gravitate to the school that has the lowest tuition. Of course the location and cost of the training are critical considerations when assessing vocational school options, but they can not be the sole ones. Added variables such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical also. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will address a few of those questions later in this article. But to start with, let’s talk about a few of the trade options that are offered including the availability of online programs.

Vocational Schools Online

Port Lions AK student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Port Lions AK students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be suitable for online education, for instance learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to ask before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to learn a new trade.

Things to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Port Lions AK trade schoolsOnce you have selected the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to earn, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Port Lions AK area and throughout the USA to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial 2 aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Port Lions AK area trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Port Lions AK is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could suggest that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It may also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Port Lions AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Port Lions AK area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Port Lions AK company if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Alaska and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Port Lions AK, verify that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
