However with numerous trade schools to select from, exactly how do you go about finding the best one? Not only do you need to ascertain that you will receive the extensive training necessary to succeed in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. A number of students make the error of selecting a vocational school simply because the campus is nearest to their residence or where the work. Others might be attracted to the one that has the most affordable tuition. Of course the cost and location of the programs are significant factors when assessing vocational school options, but they can not be the only ones. Other variables including reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final selection. We will address some of those questions later in this post. But to start with, let’s talk about some of the trade options that are available including the availability of online schools.

Online Trade Schools

Kotlik AK student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Kotlik AK students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online training, for example learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and provides comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Kotlik AK trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Kotlik AK area and across the United States to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of important qualifications when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial 2 variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Kotlik AK area technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Make certain that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive a superior education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Kotlik AK is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It may also signify that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Kotlik AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Kotlik AK area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Kotlik AK company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Alaska and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Kotlik AK, verify that the programs you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
