Not only do you have to make sure that you will get the comprehensive training necessary to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. We will review a few of those questions shortly in this post. But to start with, let’s look at some of the trade options that are available as well as the availability of online programs.

Learning a Vocation Online

Kaltag AK student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Kaltag AK students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online classes, such as learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Kaltag AK trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to attain, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Kaltag AK area and across the United States to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the initial two variables you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Kaltag AK area technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Kaltag AK is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might signify that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It could also suggest that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Kaltag AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Kaltag AK area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Kaltag AK contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Alaska and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Kaltag AK, confirm that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.

    Kaltag, Alaska

Kaltag (KAL-tag)[6] (Ggaał Doh[pronunciation?] in Koyukon, Qałtaq in Inupiaq) is a city[4][7] and village in Yukon-Koyukuk Census Area, Alaska, United States. At the 2010 census the population was 190,[4] down from 230 in 2000.

Kaltag was a Koyokon Athabascan area used as a cemetery for surrounding villages. It is located on an old portage trail which led west through the mountains to Unalakleet. The Athabascans had seasonal camps in the area and moved as the wild game migrated. There were 12 summer fish camps located on the Yukon River between the Koyukuk River and the Nowitna River.

After the Alaska Purchase, a United States military telegraph line was constructed along the north side of the Yukon River. A trading post opened around 1880, just before the gold rush of 1884-85. Steamboats on the Yukon, which supplied gold prospectors ran before and after 1900 with 46 boats in operation on the river in the peak year of 1900. A measles epidemic and food shortages during 1900 reduced the population of the area by one-third. The village Kaltag was established after the epidemic when survivors from three nearby villages moved to the area.
