However with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you go about finding the right one? Not only do you have to make sure that you will receive the complete training necessary to succeed in your new field, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Some students make the mistake of selecting a trade school just because the campus is nearest to their home or where the work. Or they may be attracted to the one that has the lowest tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the training are important factors when analyzing vocational school options, but they can not be the only ones. Other factors including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will cover a few of those questions later in this article. But to start with, let’s talk about some of the vocation options that are offered as well as the availability of online programs.

Learning a Trade Online

Homer AK student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Homer AK students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online training, such as studying safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Homer AK trade schoolsAs soon as you have picked the trade and type of certificate or degree that you wish to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Homer AK area and throughout the United States to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school assessments. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the initial 2 factors you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Homer AK area technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you acquire an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Homer AK is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It might also mean that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Homer AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Homer AK area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Homer AK contracting company if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Alaska and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Homer AK, confirm that the schools you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
