Online Trade Schools

Clam Gulch AK student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Clam Gulch AK students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online education, for example learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Clam Gulch AK contracting company if they can provide some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Alaska and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Clam Gulch AK, check that the schools you are considering provide those options.
