new skills training sign Circle AKDeciding to work in a new occupation and enroll in a vocational school near Circle AK are serious decisions that will profoundly impact your future career. But with so many trade schools to pick from, exactly how do you approach finding the right one? Not only do you have to make certain that you will receive the extensive training necessary to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Some prospective students make the error of enrolling in a vocational school just because the campus is nearest to their home or place of employment. Others may gravitate to the one that charges the lowest tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the programs are important considerations when evaluating trade school options, but they should not be the sole ones. Additional considerations such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are important also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will cover a few of those questions later in this post. But first, let’s look at some of the trade options that are available including the accessibility of online schools.

Online Trade Schools

Circle AK student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Circle AK students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for example learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new vocation.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Circle AK trade schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to attain, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Circle AK area and all over the Country to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of important qualifications when making school assessments. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first two aspects you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Circle AK area technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you acquire an excellent education, it may assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Circle AK is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It might also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Circle AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Circle AK area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Circle AK company if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with some of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Alaska and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Circle AK, confirm that the programs you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
