However with numerous vocational schools to choose from, just how do you approach identifying the best one? Not only do you need to confirm that you will get the extensive training needed to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Some potential students make the mistake of choosing a trade school simply because the campus is closest to their home or where the work. Or they may gravitate to the school that has the most affordable tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the training are critical considerations when assessing trade school options, but they should not be the only ones. Other variables including reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final selection. We will cover a few of those questions shortly in this post. But to start with, let’s talk about some of the vocation options that are available as well as the availability of online programs.

Learning a Trade Online

Atqasuk AK student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Atqasuk AK students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online education, for instance learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online instruction with on campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and provides comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Atqasuk AK trade schoolsAfter you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to attain, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Atqasuk AK area and all over the Country to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of important qualifiers when making school comparisons. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial 2 aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Atqasuk AK area vocational schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you get an excellent education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Atqasuk AK is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It could also indicate that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Atqasuk AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Atqasuk AK area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Atqasuk AK contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to a few of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Alaska and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Atqasuk AK, confirm that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
