Online Trade Schools

Alakanuk AK student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Alakanuk AK students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online learning, for instance studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Also, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

However, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate may indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It might also indicate that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Alakanuk AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Alakanuk AK area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Alakanuk AK contracting company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Alaska and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Alakanuk AK, confirm that the schools you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment.
