Learning a Trade Online

Akutan AK student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Akutan AK students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online classes, such as studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will blend online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to find out before choosing an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

What to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Akutan AK trade schoolsAs soon as you have selected the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Akutan AK area and across the USA to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial 2 aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Akutan AK area trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get a quality education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Akutan AK is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate could indicate that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It might also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Akutan AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Akutan AK area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Akutan AK contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Alaska and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Akutan AK, check that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
