Online Trade Schools

Somerville AL student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Somerville AL students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online classes, such as studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before choosing an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to learn a new trade.

Questions to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Somerville AL trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to attain, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Somerville AL area and across the USA to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the initial two aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Somerville AL area trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you obtain an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Somerville AL is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It could also signify that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Somerville AL area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Somerville AL area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Somerville AL contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Alabama and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Somerville AL, verify that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
