Online Vocational Schools

Shorterville AL student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Shorterville AL students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online education, for example learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Points to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Shorterville AL trade schoolsOnce you have selected the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you want to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many trade schools in the  Shorterville AL area and throughout the USA to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of key qualifications when making school evaluations. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the initial two aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Shorterville AL area trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get a superior education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Shorterville AL is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It could also mean that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Shorterville AL area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Shorterville AL area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Shorterville AL contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Alabama and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Shorterville AL, check that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
